Carbon & Climate Change
The consequences of atmospheric pollution are already being felt in Canada and include climate change, thinning of the ozone layer, reduced outdoor air quality, smog and acid rain. Climate change is a particularly serious threat that has negative consequences for our climate, freshwater, waterfowl, fisheries, agriculture, forestry, coastal and northern communities and wildlife. These wide ranging environmental changes impact our health, quality of life and economy.
When wetlands are lost, greenhouse gases are released and the land's ability to store carbon is reduced, contributing to global climate change.
How is climate change impacting wetlands?
• Small wetlands dry up and disappear resulting in a loss of carbon sinks
• Permanent wetlands become seasonal and subject to greater variation in water levels
• Dramatic fluctuations in water levels enhances the release of greenhouse gases from these wetland ecosystems
• Biodiversity within affected wetlands decreases
We can fight the effects of climate change before it's too late. Our organization has management programs for landowners, like wetland restoration, to help mitigate these environmental changes. This is crucial because wetlands have the potential to remove and store greenhouse gases from the Earth's atmosphere.
