Wildlife Habitat Loss

In the 1970’s, North American habitat conditions were adequate to support waterfowl populations. Since then, continued wetland and upland changes resulting in wildlife habitat loss is impacting our national waterfowl populations.

Loss of nesting cover to cropland restricts its availability and increases nest predation rates. Ongoing wetland loss to drainage, infilling and climate change are believed to be reducing the ability of Canada’s duck breeding grounds to attract and hold breeding duck pairs.

While conservation management undertaken by DUC results in restoration and protection of habitat, they are but one of many influences, both positive and negative, on waterfowl habitat. Understanding and accounting for these changes and their potential impact on wildlife habitat loss and waterfowl populations is the challenge to DUC conservation planners.

DUC uses a science-based approach to concentrate conservation efforts in areas where they will have the greatest impact, focusing on critical habitat priorities.

Concerned about wildlife habitat loss and the depletion of our natural environments, our landowners, industry partners and supporters are motivated by the desire to make a difference in our world, now and for the future.

That is why we need your help. Without your support, wildlife habitat loss will continue unabated.
